The Shalk is a large, blue-gold beelte found mainly in the Ashlands and Grazelands of Morrowind. The beetle has poor sight, so as an added warning for approaching food or foe, the Shalk has grown special organs, called "jewels" by forigners due to their glistening blue coloration, along its body that are extremely sensitive to vibration, letting the beetle see a 360 degree arc of aroun 400 meters.

For protection, the Shalk has some of the toughest chitin out of all the creatures of Morrowind. Though the front pincers look like they would be used for grabbing and tearing, their main purpose, is to create sparks. Shalks have the ability to spew out a cloud of flamable mist that when ignited causes a small explosion of green fire.

Shalks are raised by Ashlanders and are used for protection and in the making of chitin and bonemold armors. They are kept in high rise pens covered in Muck Sponge so they cant burrow out or burn the pen down.
